# Create a site

> A site (sometimes called a property) is one website you track in Clickbase.

A **site** (sometimes called a property) is one website you track in Clickbase. Every site is scoped to your team, has its own dashboard, and gets its own **tracking key**. You can add as many sites as your plan allows.

## Add a site

1. Sign in and open your **Sites** list.
2. Choose to add a new site.
3. Enter the site's **domain** (for example `example.com`). It must be unique within your team.
4. Optionally set the reporting **timezone** — this defines what counts as a day in your reports. It defaults to UTC and you can change it later in the site's settings.

Once the site is created you'll land on its install screen, where the tracking key and the exact snippet are shown.

## What a tracking key is

The tracking key is a UUID that identifies your site. The tracker script carries it as `data-site-id`, and every hit the browser sends is tagged with it so Clickbase knows which site the traffic belongs to. It's safe to expose in your page's HTML — it only identifies the site, it doesn't grant any access to your data.

Do not confuse the tracking key with a **Developers personal access token**. The tracking key is public and only identifies the site for browser hits. A Developers token is a private server-side credential used for the REST API and MCP — including the Payments API — and must be kept secret.

## Install the script

Add the tracker to your site's `<head>`, replacing `YOUR_SITE_KEY` with your tracking key:

```html theme={null}
<script
  defer
  data-site-id="YOUR_SITE_KEY"
  data-domain="example.com"
  src="https://cdn.clickbase.so/t.js"></script>
```

The install screen shows this snippet with your key already filled in — copy it from there. For the full breakdown of the tag, its optional attributes, and content-security-policy notes, see [Install the script](/install/script).

## Verify it's working

Once the snippet is live, open your site and watch its **Realtime** view in Clickbase. Your own visit should appear within a few seconds. If nothing shows up:

* Confirm `data-site-id` matches the site's tracking key.
* Make sure no ad blocker or Content-Security-Policy is stripping `cdn.clickbase.so`.

## Choose a tracking mode

Every site tracks in **cookieless** mode by default — no cookies, no consent banner. If you need to recognize returning visitors across days, you can switch to **cookie** mode in the site's settings. See [Cookieless and GDPR](/kb/cookieless-and-gdpr) for the trade-offs.
